Wear occurs between the wire rope and the pulley, between the wire rope and the reel, but a large part of the wear is usually generated by the reel.
When it is determined that the wear is the main cause of the damage of the wire rope, the steel wire rope with a relatively thick outer wire should be used. Comparison of Wire Sizes of Steel Wire Rope Single Layer with 1" in Diameter
6×76 outer wire 0.106”
6×19S 9 Outer Steel Wires 0.080”
6×25F 12 outer wire 0.064”
6×36WS 14 Outer Wires 0.057”
6×41WS 16 Outer Wires 0.051"
Adjacent wire ropes on the drum can form point contact, which accelerates the wear of the wire rope.
Non-compacted wire ropes can form point contact on adjacent rolls of the reel, accelerating wear of the wire rope. The use of compacted wire ropes improves contact conditions and wear will decrease.
The surface of the compacted wire rope is smooth, the contact conditions are better, and the wire rope has a longer service life.
